A. Lange & Söhne belongs to Glashütte, a German town tied to precision watchmaking. Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the firm in 1845. The original mark ceased in 1948 after post-war nationalisation, and returned in 1990 when Walter Lange, the founder’s great-grandson, registered the name again. That break matters: the house has an old legacy, but today’s production is not two centuries of unbroken administration. It is a deliberate reconstruction of craft, language and place.

The Glashütte line

Off-centre dials, a large date, in-house plates and bridges and a quieter look set the brand apart from more ornamental Swiss tradition. Lange 1 introduces the idea: the sub-dials do not line up in the usual way, yet the drawing stays balanced. Zeitwerk turns attention to a mechanical digital display. 1815 recovers the founder’s references. Odysseus brings the house toward a high-standard sports watch. Before you compare, confirm the reference and the calibre.

Finishing that asks for a slow look

Much of the interest sits on the back: the movement, the finishing of the bridges, the engraving and the layout of the parts. The house built its name on in-house movements and on a far smaller scale than a widely distributed premium watch.

Editorial classification

A. Lange & Söhne on the Luxe Index: 96 of 100

Short output, in-house movements and hand finishing hold a very high score.
