Audemars Piguet was founded in Le Brassus, in the Vallée de Joux, in 1875, by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet. The house remains independent and in the hands of the founding families. That line — valley, manufacture, archive and an octagon the market recognises at a distance — weighs more than any photograph of a Royal Oak.
Three families to read the catalogue
Royal Oak, drawn by Gérald Genta in 1972, takes sports steel into haute horology with an octagonal case, a bolted bezel and a tapisserie dial. Royal Oak Offshore widens the idea: more volume, another presence on the wrist, the same code. Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet works a round case and lugs drawn out of the caseband, for anyone who reads the house beyond the octagon. Grand complications, Millenary and the museum pieces in Le Brassus do not fit in those three folders, but they stop every Audemars Piguet being treated as the same watch in a different case.
Manufacture in the valley
The floor at Le Brassus concentrates movement, finishing and the complications the house wants to sign. The Musée Atelier shows the timeline and the craft; a visit does not replace reading the reference. Output is short; the waiting list for one Royal Oak does not describe the whole catalogue.
