Blancpain begins in 1735, when Jehan-Jacques Blancpain opens the workshop in Villeret. The house has never made quartz: the wrist is mechanical, the floor is the Vallée de Joux. In 1953 comes the Fifty Fathoms, the diving watch the French navy took into the water. Since 1992 it has belonged to the Swatch Group; complications leave the farmhouse in Le Brassus, movements leave the manufacture in Le Sentier. That line — 1735, the dive, the farm — weighs more than any campaign for a blue bezel.

Three families to read the catalogue

Fifty Fathoms is the instrument: a watertight case, a bezel, the wrist that reads depth. Villeret is the dress line named after the village, a round case and a clean dial. The complications — perpetual calendar, repeater, carrousel — leave the farm. Air Command and Métiers d'Art do not fit in those folders, but they stop every Blancpain being treated as the same watch in a different case.

Le Brassus and the Faubourg

The farmhouse in Le Brassus holds the haute-horology workshop. In Paris the flagship occupies 11 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré; there are also Galeries Lafayette. In Geneva the street address is 40 rue du Rhône. In New York, 40 East 57th Street. Output of a complication is short; the queue for a Fifty Fathoms does not describe the whole catalogue.
