Chaumet begins in 1780, when Marie-Étienne Nitot opens the jewellery house in Paris. His son François-Régnault takes the house to Napoleon’s court: tiaras, crowns, jewels that read the empire. In 1907 Joseph Chaumet installs workshop and boutique at 12 Place Vendôme, in the Hôtel Baudard de Saint-James, and gives the house the name it still uses. Since 1999 it has belonged to LVMH. That line — 1780, the diadem, number 12 — weighs more than any window of a gold hexagon.

Three families to read the catalogue

Bee My Love is the hexagon: the hive in gold, the ring the house made recognisable at a distance. Joséphine reads Napoleonic tiaras on the wrist and at the neck, the aigrette turned into an everyday jewel. Liens is the stroke that ties two lines. High jewellery, watches and archive pieces do not fit in those folders, but they stop every Chaumet being treated as the same object in a different metal.
