Van Cleef & Arpels was born in 1906, when Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels opened the jewellery house in Paris. Place Vendôme became the symbolic address: numbers 20 and 22 hold boutique, workshop and salons where Alhambra, Zip and the ballerinas took shape. Since 1999 the house has belonged to Richemont, alongside Cartier and Chaumet. That line — 1906, Mystery Set, the clover — weighs more than any generic window.
Three families to read the catalogue
Alhambra is the clover: mother-of-pearl, carnelian or diamonds, the lucky motif that crossed generations. Perlée reads lines of gold beads on bracelet, ring and watch. Frivole tilts petals and heart as if nature had been picked at the right instant. High jewellery, Poetic Complication watches and one-of-a-kind pieces do not fit in those folders, but they stop every VCA being treated as the same object in a different metal.
